a good modern poem

i am weary of self-serving sob stories
about heartbreak, broken atms,
well-earned breakups, pockets full
of breaking credit.

a good modern poem seeks
to divide and conquer, separate
the part from the whole,

the body from the soul.

it is written.  cupid has been smitten
by an orphaned kitten.

it is stated.  cupid shot his arrow
at your confident, slovenly rival,
just because your dumb ass
hesitated.

i am tired of wannabe sacrificial lambs
giving endless details of pyramid scams
that failed, trains of ambition
derailed, false idols hailed
and revolutions
that never prevailed.

a good modern poem seeks
to isolate and attack, separate
the lyric from the song,
the way too-short
from the far too long.

i witnessed venus take a giant hit
from a glass bong, saw zeus drink
a tall glass of carrot juice, witnessed
mars find a fence for a warehouse
full of stolen cars.  i saw neptune
try to shoot down the moon
and august arm wrestle
with a midget version of june.

a great modern poem
should take a piss
on every outdated myth, seek
to divide and conquer that which
cannot make us any stronger.
