Wedding Poem for Dave and Lucinda

bar harbor, maine, september 2008

as the monsoon refreshes a starving plain,
as the sunshine nurtures an orchard of grain,
this love came, with no mutual glance
or shared syllable in vain.

as the mountaintop does beg to be scaled,
as the underdog champion deserves to be hailed,
this love sailed, with no secrets kept
and not a shred of doubt emailed.

beneath the purpled veil of capital’s dusk,
amidst a prairie of concrete and steel,
i arrived to bear witness
to the cosmic origins
of this love more than real.

like a star seeking a galaxy, we drove
clear across town
looking for a good kabob dinner.
in two pairs of eyes there was a simmering glimmer
as the day-rays grew thinner.
we heard a rousing riot of fiddles
after munching another culture’s vittles
-a large dessert arrived and i sat
in the middle.
between old irish tunes their synapses connected,
and aligned distant moons.
we followed the concert with a lengthy pub stop
soaking up glasses of Guinness like we were a mop.
i relished their vibe, felt like a scribe,
grabbed a pen
to record this passion play beyond my humble ken.

what words do justice to this divinely-ordained union
of a thespian drummer sporting the greek epic mane
and a fashion guru conservationist
with a solid potter’s vein?

may your love blossom like an arena of orchids
taking root in some feckless desert.

may your love burn holes in the sun
and cast hopeful shadows on stormclouds.

may your love run free and clear
like an ancient stream worth saving.
may your love always be, more than
the sum of your parts
-an everlasting spectacle
so pure and amazing.
